Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says Venezuela’s crisis can only be solved with an inclusive political agreement based on “a serious dialogue” between the government and opposition.
Guterres told a press conference Friday that he delivered this message to Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza when they met this week.
He said reaching a political agreement requires agreement from both sides.
“I don’t believe that a problem like Venezuela can be solved without a political and inclusive agreement based on a serious dialogue,” Guterres said. “I know it’s not easy, but it is my deep belief.”
The once-wealthy oil nation is facing an economic and political crisis after two decades of socialist rule, with masses fleeing the country to escape runaway inflation on pace to surpass 23 million per cent.
